The Grand National Party (GNP) on August 5, 2002 asserted again the “MDP (Millennium Democratic Party)’s political manipulation and aiding allegation.” The GNP said that Kim, who has alleged the military evasion by GNP’s presidential candidate Lee’s sons, was the person the MDP had announced it would appoint its special investigative aid.

But the MDP would not boggle at the accusation. It demanded in the meeting of its high-ranking seniors for the fair investigation by the Prosecutors’ Office of the evasion allegation. It also threatened to appoint a special prosecutor if the Prosecution’s investigation would not be satisfactory and to invoke the Congress’ Power to Investigate. In sum, the matter is getting deeper into mire.

GNP’s Director General Kim Young-il held a press conference on 5th and contended, “On June 27, 2002, the MDP announced the appointment of Kim to the office of a special aid to a congressional committee chaired by Rep. Chun Yong-taek. Then, it withdrew the announcement in the dark. The Prosecutors’ Office should focus on prosecution of the secret relationship between the MDP and Kim.”

In response, Congressman Chun of the MDP explained, “It is true that our party considered appointing Kim a special aid to one of the 5 subcommittees dealing with 5 suspicions regarding candidate Lee. But the plan was discarded due the opposition within our party.

In the meanwhile, MDP’s senior members contended, “One of the GNP’s congressmen is trying to hinder the prosecution of the allegations regarding candidate Lee’s sons’ evasion of military duty and cover-up efforts thereof. The GNP should disclose the nature of the group named “Advocates of the National Intelligence Service (ANIS)” and dismiss the covert operation team affiliated with the ANIS.”
