Japanese Maritime Science Technology Center under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology announced on the 18th that `Earth Simulator, ` supercom at Yokohama Laboratory, recorded world fastest calculating speed.

The computer made by NEC made a record of operating speed at 35.61 trillion times a second (35.61 teraflops) by adopting super high speed parallel computing system.

This speed is 5 times as fast as that of ASCI White Pacific System (7.226 teraflops) assembled by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, USA.

This super computer, developed in the late February, is being used for analyzing meteorological phenomena like global warming and forecasting path of a typhoon. Technology Center plans to throw it into practical field from autumn.
