The environment of detention rooms at police stations, which have been often called a blind spot of human rights, will be improved drastically.

The National Police Agency (NPA) announced a package of measures Wednesday to improve holding cells at 213 police stations nationwide by installing "ondol" (heated floor) systems and air conditioners among other renovations. The NPA often houses convicted criminals at police stations when there is a shortage of cells at local penitentiaries.

The agency also decided to boost the illumination in detention cells install facilities for the convenience of handicapped and elderly people. It will also increase the budget for food, currently set at 760 won per meal, and set up a dining area.
