The Environmental Reporters' Club, comprised of former and present environment-related reporters in the central press, designated Green Korea United (GKU) as the winner of the "Environmental Man of the Year" prize. An award ceremony was held in a conference room at the Ministry of Environment building in the Kwachon government complex Thursday.

GKU won the prize for its diverse and persistent environmental preservation activities, including the disclosure of the illegal discharge of toxic substances into the Han River by the U.S. Armed Forces in Korea, and other environmental problems surrounding the U.S. army bases.

Park Young-Shin, co-president of GKU, said in an address at the ceremony, ¡°GKU will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Environment and raise essential and basic issues related to environmental preservation on a long-range basis.¡±
