Yonsei hopes for N. Korea campus

The inaugural ceremony of the 14th president of Yonsei University was held Tuesday at the Yonsei Memorial Hall. For the ceremony, professors, students, school officials and various outstanding members of Korean society attended.

"Practice the founding members` conviction of the promotion of truth and freedom, as well as the embodiment of the Christian ethic of serving in the name of love, within the Yonsei educational principle fit for today`s generation of learners," the newly appointed president Kim pledged in his inaugural speech.

Kim also proposed to promote the development of Yonsei through the formation of a special task force for the development of Yonsei in the new millennium.

To promote international competitiveness in the area of education and research, he proposed to establish a Yonsei international education institute.

In response to the thawing of the inter-Korean relationship, he proposed a Yonsei satellite campus in North Korea, a Yonsei committee of volunteer medical doctors, and a committee for exchange of academia.

Kim also pledged to develop Yonsei medical facilities to a world-class level and to establish a system of the ombudsman for various fields of study in order to promote the transparency in the management of the school.
