Residents in the southern regions of Kyonggi Province and civic organizations have demanded compensation for the flood damage by torrential rains allegedly aggravated by random development of land and mountains in the region.

They called Monday for the Yongin City government and the construction companies to compensate for the damage.

Unless appropriate compensation is made, the residents and the civil organizations will file compensation suits against the city administration and the construction firms, they said.

The Citizens Solidarity for Environmental Justice claimed that the flood damage was caused mainly by landslides originating from construction sites.

"We are now receiving reports on damage from citizens to lodge the suit," a spokesman for the solidarity said.
