Both ruling and opposition lawmakers led by the Millennium Democratic Party`s Jeong Dae-Chul are planning to promote a special law that will abolish capital punishment and replace it with life sentences. The new bill will be submitted to the National Assembly on the 24th.

In consideration of conflicting views on the abolishment of the death penalty, for sentences of life imprisonment which do not allow for paroles, general special pardons or term reductions, amendments will be made to relevant parole-related regulations.

There are 32 laws related to capital punishment, including the Criminal Law Act, penal laws, the Criminal Procedure Code and the Military Criminal Law Act.
