Cars run through Baehuryeong Tunnel, Korea’s longest tunnel at 5.1 kilometers, linking the village of Shinbuk in Chuncheon and the township of Gandong in Hwacheon County, Gangwon Province, that was opened Friday. Completed after eight years of construction at a cost of 218 billion won (193 million U.S. dollars), the tunnel is 500 meters longer than the country’s second-longest Neungdong Tunnel, which connects Milyang to Ulju, South Gyeongsang Province. The new tunnel is equipped with Korea`s first emergency tunnel measuring 5 meters wide.
