Former Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee (photo) yesterday made his first public appearance at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas after stepping down in April 2008.

In a meeting with reporters, Lee said, “Not only business but all sectors of society, including education and culture, should wake up to reality and establish their respective footing in both Korea and the world.”

He urged companies never to let their guard down despite the brisk performance of domestic companies including Samsung Electronics amid the global economic crisis last year and this year’s bright economic outlook.

On Pyeongchang County`s third successive bid to host the Winter Olympics, Lee said, “Though it won`t be easy, I`ll do my best for starters. The only way to win the bid is to make sure that the government and citizens alike make concerted efforts toward the same goal.”

Lee is a former member of the International Olympic Committee.

On when he will return to Samsung management, he briefly replied, “Such a move is still far away.”
