Regional Torrential Rain Expected Through Weekend

The North Gyeongsang and eastern Gangwon provinces saw heavy rain Friday with Seokpo in Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang Province having 218 millimeters of rain. The whole nation is forecast to have a couple of rainfalls on Saturday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecast Friday, “As rain clouds, which produced heavy rain throughout the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, moved toward the North Gyeongsang and eastern Gangwon provinces, those regions had downpours. Though gradually free from a rain front on Saturday, the nation will have a couple of rainfalls and some regions are likely to see heavy rain.”

According to the weather watchdog, as of 5 p.m. Friday, Uljin in North Gyeongsang Province had 136.5 millimeters of rain; Yeongju 117 millimeters; Imshil in North Jolla Province 108.5 millimeters; and Taebaek in Gangwon Province 106 millimeters.

On the contrary, Seoul saw a small amount of rain with 0.5 millimeters, which contradicted the weather forecast of the day before.

From 5 p.m. Friday through Saturday midnight, Gyeongsang Province, eastern Gangwon Province, and the East Coast regions are expected to have 20 to 60 millimeters of rain; western Gangwon Province and Gyeonggi Province 10 to 40 millimeters; Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, the Chungcheong provinces, the Jeolla Province, five West Sea islands, Ulleung Island and the Dokdo islets five to 10 millimeters.

Heavy rains have left huge damage. According to the Disaster Prevention and Countermeasures Headquarters, the rain had killed five people and left six injured as of 5 p.m. Friday.
