Goyang City in Gyeonggi Province is preparing a citywide welcome for global K-pop icon BTS, draping the city in the group’s signature purple ahead of the opening concerts of its “Arirang” world tour. Officials plan to use the event to strengthen Goyang’s identity as a destination for extended-stay concert tourism and to spread the economic benefits of large-scale performances across local communities.
● Visitor surge expected, economic impact in focus
About 120,000 fans from South Korea and abroad are expected to attend the three concerts scheduled for April 9, 11 and 12 at Goyang Stadium.
The stadium exterior has been lined with purple banners welcoming the tour, while bus shelters display fan-produced photo advertisements of the members. Starting April 4, Ilsan Lake Park will host a nightly musical fountain show themed around the BTS tour at 7:30 p.m.
A city official said anticipation is particularly high as the tour marks the group’s first full-member world tour since completing military service. The concerts also carry added meaning as they will be held in the hometown of leader RM.
To encourage visitors to stay longer and spend locally, the city has launched its “Goyang Con-Trip” program. The route begins with a large mural at the Goyang Tourism Information Center and continues through a walk at Ilsan Lake Park, dining along Bamridan-gil and shopping in the Lafesta and Western Dom districts.
Officials pointed to last year’s concert by Seventeen as a reference point. Card spending in the Daehwa Station area rose 58.1 percent compared with a typical weekend, while the floating population increased 17.2 percent. The city said it aims to extend similar gains to neighborhood businesses during the BTS concerts.
From April 6 to 15, about 130 small businesses will take part in a “Big Sale Week,” offering discounts and promotional events. Kim Sung-hyun, who runs a coffee shop, said major concerts often boost sales by more than 30 percent and that he is preparing to hire additional staff for the BTS shows.
● Focus on safety and crowd management
Goyang aims to deliver a safe, incident-free event, drawing on experience hosting 26 concerts by global artists including G-Dragon, Coldplay and BLACKPINK.
The city has set up a joint support system involving district offices, affiliated agencies, police, fire authorities, railway operators and event organizers. About 920 safety personnel will be deployed to manage crowds and maintain order.
To reduce congestion, merchandise sales will be held at KINTEX Exhibition Center 2 rather than at the stadium. After the concerts, additional staff will be stationed at Daehwa Station on Seoul Subway Line 3, while passengers will be guided to nearby Juyeop Station to ease crowding.
Shuttle buses will run every seven to 10 minutes between KINTEX Station on the GTX-A line and the stadium. During the event period, the city will operate a 24-hour control center to handle complaints and emergencies, while conducting advance hygiene and safety inspections of local accommodations.
Goyang Mayor Lee Dong-hwan said the city will provide a high-quality concert experience through thorough safety measures and a range of welcome programs.
