The Gwangju District Court’s second criminal department (presiding judge: Kang Shin-jung) sentenced County Governor Kang Jong-mahn of Yeonggwang-gun, South Jeolla Province to seven years in prison and 50 million won in fines on bribery charges yesterday.

The court ruled Kang guilty of accepting 100 million won from a contractor in a bid for the construction of the county’s sewerage treatment facilities. It said Kang, after only less than six months in office, showed no sign of repentance, hence such heavy penalties.

Kang was prosecuted for receiving 100 million won total on three occasions, including 40 million won offered by two people working for building companies in an attempt to win contracts for sewage treatment establishments.
