"Science" OKs Future Hwang Articles

Despite the controversy surrounding Professor Hwang Woo-suk of Seoul National University, it seems that Hwang will be allowed to publish his works in Science magazine in the future.

In an e-mail interview on Sunday, Science magazine’s editor in chief Donald Kennedy replied that he does not expect the recent controversy to block Hwang from publishing papers in Science in the future.

He also reaffirmed that Hwang’s report on extracting stem cells from cloned cells for the first time, published in February 2004, will not be retracted.

“I think that the paper should not be retracted. However, we will decide whether other measures are needed after we see the Korean government investigates the ethical issues,” he said.

“No retraction will be called for, even if the allegations turn out to be true. However, in that case, the journal will run a correction,” said Kennedy in a November 20 interview with the Washington Post.
