“A New Look in the Eyes“, Utmost Effort Even from Warm-ups

Ever since Guss Hiddink took over the Korean national soccer team a year ago, a total of 56 players have been tested in real games. Only 23 among them made the final entry for the 2002 World Cup playoffs, which is only 140 days away. Unfortunately, that is not the end. The competition to make the `Best 11` is like passing through the eye of a needle.

Despite the fatigue from a long flight previous day, the Korean team started the year`s first training in San Diego`s Hickman Field, U.S.A. Players seemed focused and, despite bad weather conditions, they seemed somewhat cheerful.

The day`s training, which went on for an hour and twenty minutes, was only to warm up with some headings and passes, but players maintained a serious composure throughout. Hiddink kept shouting `Good!`, and complemented, "It`s been a long break, but everybody seems to be in good shape."

The reason why the players are trying so hard is because the North-Central America Gold Cup is the last stage in deciding the final `Best 11`.

Whether previously recognized or not, every player is determined to make the list.

The `experienced` Kim Byung Ji, Choi Yong Su, and Hwang Sun Hong are fully determined, not to mention the `young` Choi Tae Uk, Cha Du Ri, Park Ji Sung, etc.

The goalkeeper Kim Byung Ji, who fell behind because of an unexpected event, regained his status in last year`s match with U.S.A, got Hiddink`s attention by throwing his body to defend the official World Cup ball `Fevernova`.

Also, Choi Yong Su, who was excluded previously and re-established through the Nigerian match in September last year, is competing with the eldest Hwang Sun Hong for the `one- top` position. Hwang is also very determined, remembering the nightmare of 1998 World Cup in France and mindful that this will be his last World Cup.

Choi Tae Wook has shaved his head to intimidate his `potential rivals`. Sul Gi Hyun and Ahn Jung Hwan, and Park Ji Sung, who is surprised by Kim Nam Il`s sudden rise, seem more focused than ever. Also, Cha Du Ri seems encouraged by his father, Korea`s ex- head coach, Cha Bum Kun who is to come to America as TV broadcaster.

Until now, Hiddink walked on a lonely path enduring criticism against his indecision over the `Best 11`. However, his patience seems to be bearing fruits, which can be seen in the team`s new spirit.
