Army Colonel Yang Seung-Sook Promoted to the First Female General

The regular promotions in fall were carried out including the first female general. A list of 102 general-level promotions was approved.

The Ministry of Defense promoted four including the chief of the staff Kwon Young-Gi (A 222 Division) to the rank of lieutenant general and appointed them the commander of army corps. The Defense Ministry also promoted the intelligence commander Kwon Yong-Jae (graduate of 25th Korea Military Academy) to the rank of lieutenant general and appointed him the chief of the National Defense Intelligence Headquarters as well as chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs at the same time.

The Ministry of Defense promoted Army Col. Yang Seung-Sook, chief of the Army Nurse Corps under the Army Headquarters, to the one-star rank. She is the first female general in 53-year history of Korea Army.

Seven including Chun Yeon-Woo (graduate of 29th Korea Military Academy) were promoted from lieutenant general to the rank of major general to become the commander of army corps. Five including Kim Bok-San are to be promoted to the rank of major general and to be appointed as well.

Five commodores of the Navy including Kwon Young-Jun (graduate of 27th Korea Navy Academy), and four brigadier generals including Lee Chan (graduate of 21st Korea Air Force Academy) were promoted to the rank of major general.

The Ministry of Defense also promoted 76 colonels, including 53 in the Army, 12 in the Navy, and 11 in the Air Force, to the one-star rank.

Defense Ministry appointed lieutenant generals Lee Sang-Hee and Hwang Kyoo-Shik to become the chief of the strategy-planning division at the Joint Chiefs of Staffs and the president of the National Defense University, respectively. The Ministry plans to appoint lieutenant Shin Il-Soon (graduate of 26th Korea Army Academy) to become the education chief commander.
