``I’ve written music for the love of music. Now, I launch onto finding audience.``
Young composers, who met through the internet, with various backgrounds will hold a music recital. This music recital aims at `communication` through which ordinary audiences can share the appreciation of music. Free music recital called `Compositions by Sheen Dong-Il` will be held at Maru Hall (Hak Dong, Gangnam Ku, Seoul) at 7:30 p.m. on June 2.
Seven composers who will present their musical works are in their twenties and early thirties, including a `senior` Sheen Dong-Il (lecturer at Korean National University of Art). When the seven composers shared various opinions at Sheen’s website, they were `in sink` with one another. Although they were passionate for composition, they were disappointed because they could not find audience who could appreciate their music. The seven composers also shared their struggles as to whether they should pursue their passion for composition.
After heated debates and struggles, they agreed to find audience through the recitals (more than twice a year). Their career experiences are as diverse as there are different faces. After leaving English major in college, Kim Sang-Hyun entered the Korean National University of Art majoring in music theory. Kim composes mostly classical songs. Kim Soo-Min, currently studying at the Composition Department at Kyongwon University, is an `eccentric person` who prefers Beethoven and Chopin to contemporary music, which is easier to receive better grades. Kim Jung-Hee committed to the labor movement after leaving Electronics Department in college, and started to study music after marriage. All other members are eccentric as well. For instance, Kim Hyun-Suk took a leave of absence in college, Lee Ji-Hyun dreams of fulfilling the passion for composition after having managed a private piano school along with the marriage, and Woo-Ye So-Ra has been struggling with the musical identity under a father who is also a professional musician.
However, they have one commonality. ``Composition no longer exists only for the composer. Composers should have responsibility for audience, `` says Kim Jung-Hee. ``Techniques for the sake of techniques are not what I want to do. One should do music as a means by which one reveals oneself to the audience,`` says Lee Ji-Hyun. Although musical instruments and techniques vary, they share the passion for music which every body can appreciate.
Sheen Dong-Il said that he was planning to share music files through the internet along with the recitals to work together with people who have passion for composition.
