Korean film ¡®Chunhyang,¡¯ hit in L.A.

Renowned director Lim Kwon-Taek`s film ¡±Chunhyang (The Story of Chunhyang)¡±which is regarded by some to be a strong candidate for an Academy Award nomination in the Foreign Language Film category this year, is enjoying considerable popularity among U.S. moviegoers.

The film completed its first week at the New Art Theater in Santa Monica, western Los Angeles, on Jan. 12 and has been showing at three other U.S. theaters since Jan. 19. They are the Westside Pavilion Cinemas in western LA, Landmark Rialto in Pasadena and Edward University in Urbane.

The movie is scheduled to be open in San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and Honolulu beginning Feb. 2.

Officials at New Art Theater said the film grossed $23,000 in ticket sales in its first week, almost twice the $12,000 to $15,000 generated by most films shown there.
