During a dinner hosted by the Korea Society, President Kim Dae-Jung, currently on a visit to New York, gave a speech and conferred the Van Fleet Award on former US President Jimmy Carter.

The award is given in honor of the late General Van Fleet, who in 1957 established an organization that gave birth to the Korea Society. It was first conferred in 1992 and annually thereafter to individuals who have made exceptional efforts for the betterment of the Korea-U.S. relationship.
