In the draft of a party platform prepared ahead of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, Monday, the Republican Party will urge an adequate explanation on North Korea’s nuclear proliferation activities and maintain its demand for complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement (CVID) of North Korea’s nuclear program.

The term “CVID” has represented the official principle of the Bush administration on the North`s dismantlement since U.S. President George W. Bush took office. The term, however, disappeared from official talks after dialogue between the United States and North Korea gained momentum in the wake of Pyongyang`s nuclear test in Oct. 2006.

The draft of the party platform released Saturday also suggested a stronger alliance with South Korea, saying Washington has confronted threat posed by the “maniacal” autocratic North on the international order together with South Korea, an ally that shares its borders with North Korea.

On North Korean human rights, the party said that it hopes for restoration of human rights for North Koreans living in agony, and that it shares South Koreans’ desire for reunification that can bring peace and freedom to the Korean Peninsula.
