Kite-powered Cargo Vessel

The world’s first cargo ship partially powered by a giant kite, Beluga Projects, (10,000 ton) makes its maiden voyage in Germany bounding for Venezuela on January 22. The cargo ship built by German-based Beluga Shipping is pulled by the 160-squre-meter kite set 100-300 meters above the bows of the ship. Depending on the prevailing wind condition, it is expected to reduce fuel consumption by 35-50 percent.
