A warrant hearing took place yesterday at 3 p.m. for two hours at the Busan District Court, which accused Jeon Gun-pyo, the nation’s highest tax official, of receiving bribes.

The prosecutors’ office put pressure on Jeon based on evidence and constant statements from Jeong Sang-gon (53), formerly the head of the tax office in Busan, who allegedly gave five cash payouts worth 50 million won and $10,000 to Jeon from last August until January this year.

It is known that prosecutors stressed that Jeon may attempt to destroy evidence as they have confirmed that the head of the highest tax official had ordered Lee Byeong-dae, the current head of the Busan tax office, to persuade Jeong not to testify against Jeon at the end of August and middle of September this year.

Meanwhile, the former head of National Tax Service reportedly said that, “Prosecutors’ arguments are not reliable.”

Jeon also said to the press right before the warrant hearing began that, “I believe that the court will judge this fairly, and I have prepared for it.”
