U.S. Comfort Women Resolution To Be Voted On Next Month

Groups of U.S. Korean voters campaigning for a House resolution denouncing Japan’s wartime sexual enslavement of women set out to push the House of Representatives by seeking the support of about 200 Asian voter groups, as the resolution was not put on a vote on May 23 as expected in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

A source in the New York/New Jersey Council of Korean Voters Groups said, “House leaders sponsoring the resolution, including Rep. Mike Honda, are expecting to see the resolution put to a vote in June.”

An aide to Rep. Tom Lantos, who can decide when to call a vote as chairman of the foreign affairs committee, said at a meeting with the leadership of a Korean American committee in Washington, “We are pondering when to call a vote and making efforts to pass the resolution.”

Rep. Lantos once said, “We’ll call for a vote when the number of sponsors goes over 120.” Sponsors of the resolution currently amount to 129.
