Hyundai President Chung Mong-hun Commits Suicide

Hundai Asan Chairman Chung Mong-hun committed suicide by jumping from a Hyundai building in Gye-dong, Seoul early Monday.

Chung went into his office at around 11:30 a.m., Sunday and Chung`s body was later found dead by an office guard at around 5:00 am in a flowerbed at the rear of the building.

Suicide notes that Chung left were found in his 12th floor office.

One was addressed to Hyundai Asan CEO Kim Yun-gyu and Chung asked him to continue Hyundai`s business projects in North Korea. The other one was addressed to his family and he asked his family to scatter his cremated ashes at Mount Geumgang.

His body was taken to Hyundai-Asan Hospital at around 8 a.m., Monday.

At the Hyunai building in Gye-dong, its staff and Hyundai Motor Chief Chung Mong-gu came out and watched the process of handling Chung`s body and than later headed toward the Hyundai-Asan Hospital.

Chung is also registered as an executive of the Hyundai Merchant Marine and was the one who led the Gaeseong Industrial Park project and Mount Geumgang tourist businesses. The Hyundai Asan of which Chung was involved in management in person has been suffering from severe deficit this year as a 19.9 billion won government`s Mount Geumgang tourism promotion fund has been strapped by the opposition parties’ objection.

Chung was in a trial on charges of secrete remittance to North Korea and was being investigated by prosecutors on 15 billion won secrete fund allegedly he had given to Park Ji-won.

Chung has been ruined since Hyundai Group suffered financial difficulties while disputing over the right of management with Hyundai Motor chief Chung Mong-gu in 2002.

Hyundai`s key affiliates such as Hyundai Engineering Construction, Hyundai Electronics(Now Hynix), and Hyundai Securities broke away.

A note addressed to CEO Kim = For my father, you were more sincere child than any one of us. As my father wished to do when you aided him, please strongly pursue the projects in North Korea.

A note addressed to his wife = Darling, it is all my faults. I only leave you all the burdens. ○○, △△, ◇◇, please forgive your father. Please forgive your foolish father.

I wish you to scatter my cremated ashes at Mount Geumgang.

○○, I saw you today and noticed that you are now even prettier. Because of me, your life... I love you.

△△, Whenever I see you, You are becoming more of an adult. You will be always strong and live a happy life.

◇◇, I regret I did not have many chances to show my affection on you.

○○, △△, ◇◇, please take good care of your mother.
