AFT reported on August 11 that Taiwan recently applied entry into UN and thus already strained relation between China and Taiwan was expected to be sourer.

According to AFT, “Taiwan government applied its entry into UN as a national name of Republic of China. That action emphasizes the equal sovereignty as China.” Said a diplomatic official on condition of anonymity. This bold move came a week after Taiwan’s president Chen Shui-bian provoked China by saying, “ A referendum should be conducted to decide whether Taiwan should officially be separated from China.”

Analysts prospect that the action will provoke more China but Taiwan’s entry into the UN is not likely to happen. China has successfully blocked Taiwan from being a member state of the UN 9times since 1993.

UN has not allowed Taiwan’s UN entry since it admitted China as a representative of both of China and Taiwan.
