Chief Justice visits China for Korea-China justice exchanges

The Supreme Court said on Sunday that Chief Justice Yang Seung-tae met his counterpart, Zhou Qiang of the Chinese Supreme People’s Court, and agreed on justice exchanges and cooperation between the two countries on Tuesday last week. The two justice chiefs decided to increase exchanges between their high-level judges from the Supreme Court and mutual training opportunities for judges at the Judicial Research and Training Institute in Korea and their counterpart in China.

After the meeting, Yang held a conference on the “Social Development in Korea and the role of the Justice Branch” with 20 Chinese Supreme Court Justices. “The Korean judicial branch has made its efforts to address side effects and conflicts that appeared in the course of fast economic growth such as economic division, infringement on individuals rights and freedom, and environmental problems,” he said, adding, “I’ll do my best to make the court transparent and open, and create a reasonable trial system.”

Yang met Wang Shengjun, former president of the Supreme Court People of China and current vice president of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party, and Cao Jianming, prosecutor-general of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Then, he headed for Uzbekistan on Friday to meet Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov and Supreme Court Justice Buritoshi Mustafaev.
