As the U.S. presidential election is days away, FBI Director James Comey announced to re-examine Hillary Clinton’s email investigation. The Comey’s announcement would shake the race between the Democratic and Republican parties. The question is why Mr. Comey, who was appointed by the Obama administration, made the decision in a politically charged environment ahead of a bitter general election.

His decision is quite a contrast to the tradition of the FBI. The New York Times reported “The FBI has a history of extreme caution near Election Day so as not to influence the result. Today's break from that tradition is appalling.” The FBI's first director, J. Edgar Hoover, was deeply involved in the politics with the agency’s classified information. Since then, an unwritten law of not to be involved in the politics was made in order not to repeat the dark history. But Mr. Comey is breaking that rule.

Thus, he made the decision by himself against his direct supervisor, Attorney General Loretta Lynch. It has also been said that he did not report to President Barack Obama. "We had that letter after it was made public, so we did not have advance warning," White House press secretary Eric Schultz told reporters during a gaggle aboard Air Force One on Friday.
