Watchers say that conservative Catholics in the U.S. have growing discontent about liberal acts by Pope Francis, who was inaugurated in March.

According to the Washington Post and the New York Times, conservative Catholics are being confused at Pope Francis who has taken unconventional acts, including his support of gay rights, preaching to Catholics not to be obsessed with the doctrine, and inclusion of female believers in foot-washing ceremony. U.S. media reported that since Conservative Catholics in the U.S. wield immense influence on issues such as contraception, abortion and homosexuality, attention should be paid to their protest against the Pope.

The Washington Post said whereas the previous two popes were faithful in religious dogma and avoided making speeches in public, Pope Francis takes instant interviews, and behaves in a way as if he does not care about political ramifications of his statements. The newspaper noted that conservative Catholics are not showing trust in Pope Francis, saying that they miss the previous pope. It also reported that online posts such as “I feel uncomfortable due to the Pope” and “I feel distressed due the Pope” are gaining enthusiastic response among conservative Catholics.
