At the Dadohae National Marine Park in South Jeolla Province, Korea National Park Service recently found Shiho`s seahorse, or Hippocampus sindonis (photo), an internationally endangered species, the organization said on Wednesday. The seahorse is 10 centimeters long and has tentacle-form bumps all over the body, a different feature compared to other sea horses in Korea. Shiho`s seahorse is known to be classified as Japan`s unique species as they were found in Japan`s southern coastal waters flowing from Shizuoka Prefecture to Tokyo. It was named after scholar Sindo who first discovered it in early 1990s. Some 50 kinds of seahorses have been protected since 2004 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
