다양한 ‘主語 변화’ 능력 키워라왜내가 이렇게 간단한 원리를 깨닫지 못했지? 나도 영어 깨나 공부했는데….” 지난주 지상강의를 듣고 40대 무역회사 중견사원이 이메일을 보내왔다. 지난 주 영어문장에 나오는 4가지 동사 형태가 정조준 영어 (Pass English)의 핵심이다. 이 4가지 형태의 동사에 적절한 주어를 갖다 붙이면 정조준 영어를 구사하는 것이다.

주변에 영어깨나 하는 분들의 영어에 귀기울여 보자. 많은 경우 영어는 빨리 하는데, 주어 선정과 동사 구성이 너무 굳어 있음을 알 수 있다. 이는 자기에게 익숙한 주어, 동사만 즐겨 사용하는 버릇에서 비롯한 현상이다. 이런 사람이 주어를 다양하게 변화시킬 수 있는 능력을 갖게 되면 날개를 단 것이나 마찬가지다.

영어에서 주어가 되는 것을 정리해 보자. 가장 보편적으로 많이 사용하는 것은 9가지로 명사, 대명사, 부정어귀, To+동사, 동사+ing, The+형용사, 명사절, 의문사, 가주어 등이 있다.

9개의 주어를 사용하여 이번에 있었던 미국에 대한 테러사건에 대해 말해 보자.

1. 명사

Mr. Brown(명사) volunteered(정) to rescue(준) victims under the debris.

2. 대명사
She(대) could(조) notify(정) her husband, using her cellular phone that her airplane(명사) was(정) high-jacked.(준)

3. 부정어귀

Nobody(부정어귀) was(정) not aware of that terrorists strategy which intended to bomb World Trade Center using civilian airplanes.

4. To+동사

To console(To+동사) the victim’s family in your neighbor is(정) more important than anything else.

5. 동사+ing

Retaliating(동사+ing) of these brutal terror attacks is(정) inevitable, considering(준) anger of American citizens although it(대) may(조) cause(정) another counter attack by terrorists.

6. The+형용사

The rich(The+형) should(조) donate(정) more money to render(준) humane supports to people in deed.

7. 명사절

That Bush took the most appropriate measures toward this terror attack(명사절) was(정) well appreciated(준) by American citizens.

8. 의문사

Who(의) can(조) deny(정) that such a horrific attack(명) on innocent civilians should(조) not be(정) forgiven(준)?

9. 가주어 it

It(가) is(정) most likely that President Bush(명) will(조) deploy(정) airborne division in North Carolina.

가장 많이 사용되는 주어만 모았다. 핵심은 반복 연습이다. 주어가 나의 것이 되도록 여러 차례 연습을 해야 한다.
