[NYT]With Underdogs Out, Just Two Heavyweights Remain

The World Cup began with a statement by underdogs, but it will not end with one. Turkey, the last underdog, stalked Brazil, only to lose, 1-0, on a goal by the resurgent Ronaldo in the 49th minute Wednesday night. Now the final on Sunday will involve Germany and Brazil, who may have had their doubters when this World Cup began, but everything is relative.

Once there were 32 teams in this World Cup, the survivors of qualifying rounds all over the world. The colonized had their way over the colonials in the opening game, with Senegal showing France to be a weary and disjointed defending champion. In short order, one host team in this weird two-headed tournament, Japan, went to the Round of 16.

South Korea went to the semifinals. Good grief, even the Americans, those cute little underdogs, went to the quarterfinals. These outsiders from Europe were in a World Cup with one quarterfinalist from Asia, one from Africa and one from North America. In the past two World Cups, every quarterfinalist was from Europe or South America.

“We came to the World Cup to take part in the festival and make an impact,’’ Senol Gunes, the Turkish coach, said. ‘‘I think we’ve achieved our goal and I am proud of my players, who have done absolutely superbly. We are sorry about only one thing, that we couldn’t give the Turkish people another source of happiness” They will have this memory of shaking up the World Cup. But now there is a seventh final for Brazil and a seventh final for Germany. No underdogs here.

▼복병들은 사라지고, 헤비급만 남아

이번 월드컵은 복병들의 선전과 함께 시작됐지만 복병은 하나도 남아 있지 않은채 끝나게 됐다.

마지막 복병인 터키는 수요일 밤 브라질에 바싹 따라붙었지만 49분에 터진 부활한 호나우두의 골로 0대 1로 패했다. 일요일의 결승에선 독일과 브라질이 맞붙는다.

대회 초반만 하더라도 이 두팀에 회의적인 사람들이 있었을지도 모른다. 그러나 모든 것은 상대적이다.

세계 각지에서 지역예선을 통과해 올라 온 팀은 32개였다. 개막전에서는 피식민국이 식민국에 이겼다. 세네갈은 전 대회 우승국 프랑스가 지쳐있고 삐걱거리는 팀임을 보여주었다.

이 기묘한 2개국 공동개최 월드컵에서 한 개최국인 일본은 재빨리 16강에 올랐다. 한국은 준결승에 진출했다. 맙소사!, 귀엽고 작은 복병인 미국까지도 준준결승에 올랐네. 유럽의 아웃사이더인 터키도 살아남아, 아시아에서 1개팀, 아프리카에서 1개팀, 북미에서 1개팀과 함께 준준결승에 올랐다. 종전 두 차례의 월드컵에선 모든 준준결승 진출팀은 유럽 아니면 남미였다.

“우리는 축제에 참여하고 강한 충격을 주기 위해 월드컵에 왔다”고 셰놀 귀네슈 터키 감독은 말했다. “나는 우리가 목표를 달성했다고 생각한다. 정말 최고의 경기를 해 준 선수들이 자랑스럽다. 단 하나 미안한 것은 터키 국민을 한 번 더 행복하게 해 줄 수 없다는 점이다.”

그들은 월드컵을 뒤흔든 이런 기억을 간직하게 될 것이다. 그러나 이제는 일곱 번째 결승에 진출한 브라질과 역시 일곱 번째 결승에 진출한 독일만 남았다. 복병은 여기에 없다. 6월27일 사이타마〓조지 베시
