[NYT] Blame Club Owners for Europe’s Failures

The conspiracy theories are kicking in about the World Cup. The fix is in, according to some fans who believe that the world soccer body, FIFA, has favored one of the hosts in this World Cup. Whatever else the fans want to believe, the concept of FIFA’s arranging for a tilt in the direction of South Korea is downright ludicrous.

Joseph S. Blatter has so many enemies under his own roof that if he, or his opponents, tried to fix something, the other side would be waving the transcripts in a heartbeat.

To its credit, FIFA has indeed tried to broaden its base in recent years, opening more spaces in the World Cup for African and Asian teams and insisting on referees from many countries. No matter how hard FIFA has tried to include all regions of the world, players still have to go out and play hard.

Bad or even mediocre teams will give up goals. In this tournament, South Korea has lived up to its slogan, “Korea Team Fighting.”

Want to know why Zidane and Figo and Batigol and Maldini all looked as if they were running in quicksand this past month? Because the European leagues and team owners are greedy. One does not hear Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian prime minister, who also owns A.C. Milan, blaming himself because his captain, Maldini, has aged in dog years.

There’s your conspiracy, amici sportivi (sporting friends).

European soccer leaders have made money from the dead legs, dead brains and dead national teams. They should bank their Euros, and stop whining when their boys cannot keep up with the South Koreans.

▼유럽팀들의 실패는 구단주 탓

월드컵에 관한 음모론이 나돌고 있다. 세계축구연맹(FIFA)이 이번 월드컵 개최국 중 한 나라를 봐주고 있다고 믿는 일부 팬들에 따르면 짜고하는 경기가 있다는 것이다. 그 팬들이 믿고 싶어하는게 무엇이든 간에, FIFA가 한국에 유리하도록 뭔가를 조작했다고 생각한다면 그것은 완전히 웃기는 얘기다.

조지프 블래터 FIFA회장은 내부에 적들이 너무 많아서 만일 그나 그의 반대파들이 무엇인가를 짜고 치려했다면 다른 쪽에선 즉각 그 사본을 신나게 흔들어대고 있을 것이다.

기특하게도, FIFA는 최근 수년간 그 기반을 넓히기 위해 실제로 노력해 왔다. 아프리카와 아시아팀들에게 문호를 더 개방했고, 심판도 보다 많은 나라 출신들이 맡도록 해야 한다고 주장해 왔다. 아무리 FIFA가 세계 모든 지역을 월드컵에 포함시키려고 애쓴다고 해도 선수들이 나가서 열심히 뛰어주지 않으면 안된다. 형편 없거나, 심지어는 평범한 팀들이나 골넣기를 포기할 것이다. 이번 토너먼트에서 한국은 자신들의 슬로건인 ‘코리아 팀 파이팅’에 걸맞게 해 왔다.

지단과 피구, 바티골과 말디니가 지난달 모두 푹푹 빠지는 모래 위를 달린 것처럼 보인 이유가 뭔지 알고 싶은가? 유럽 리그와 구단주들이 욕심이 많기 때문이다. AC밀란 구단주이기도 한 실비오 베를루스코니 이탈리아 총리가 팀의 주장 말디니가 너무 늙었다고 자탄하는 소리는 아무도 듣지 못한다. 스포츠 친구들이여, 거기에 당신의 음모가 있다. 유럽 축구지도자들은 죽은 다리들, 죽은 머리들, 죽은 국가대표팀들로 돈을 벌어왔다. 그들은 그들의유로화나 잘 간수하라. 선수들이 한국선수들을 따라잡지 못한다고 더 이상 우는 소리하지 말라.
