[NYT]Germany Reaches World Cup Final

Fireworks boomed again in the night sky, and the South Korean players took their customary post-game bows, but this time there was nothing to celebrate. A wonderful dream came to an end tonight. The chanted appreciation from 65,256 fans came in salute for a month well done, not a match well played. Germany was clearly the better team as it defeated South Korea 1-0 in the World Cup semifinals, advancing to the final for the seventh time. Disappointment for South Korea came suddenly and painfully after weeks of building expectation.

An estimated seven million people gathered in plazas around the nation tonight to watch the match on giant television screens. Once hesitant to yearn for victory, fearing certain defeat, fans seemed assured this time that South Korea would prevail. South Korea was playing out a fantasy, while Germany is one of the world’s football powers. While South Korea had a nation’s rabid support, it could not match Germany’s skill and conviction. Perhaps South Korea wore down after weeks of ceaseless running. Its most imposing strength might have become its greatest vulnerability. Scoring became a greater burden with each match.

“We couldn’t make the final, ultimate pass,” South Korean Coach Guus Hiddink said. Nor will South Korea be able to build the final, ultimate victory. But it has brought immense pride and unity to the country, and showed off its ravenous spirit to a worldwide audience. No team from Asia has ever achieved this much in the World Cup. 폭죽이 밤하늘에 다시 터졌고 한국 선수들은 늘 하던대로 경기 후 관중들에게 고개 숙여 인사했다. 그러나 이번엔 축하할 만한 것이 없었다. 멋진 꿈은 오늘 밤 끝났다. 6만5256명의 팬들은 경의를 표했지만 이번 경기를 잘 했다기보다는 한 달간 잘 해주었다는 의미였다. 독일이 월드컵 준결승에서 한국을 1대0으로 꺾고 일곱 번째로 결승에 진출했을 때 분명히 한국보다는 한 수 위였다. 한국으로선 수주 동안 점증했던 기대감 속에서 실망이 갑자기, 그리고 고통스럽게 다가왔다.

오늘밤 700만명으로 추산되는 사람들이 전국의 광장에 모여 대형 TV스크린을 통해 경기를 지켜보았다. 한 때 차마 승리를 갈망하지 못하고, 있을지 모를 패배를 두려워하던 팬들은 이번엔 한국이 이길 것으로 확신하는 것처럼 보였다. 독일은 세계 축구 강국의 하나이지만 한국은 유감 없이 환상적인 경기를 펼쳐보였다. 한국은 전국적으로 열렬한 응원을 받았지만 독일의 기술과 확신을 따라가지 못했다. 아마 한국팀은 몇 주간의 끊임없는 질주로 지쳐버린 것 같다. 가장 인상적인 한국팀의 힘이 최대의 약점이 됐을지도 모른다. 매 경기 득점해야 한다는 것이 더 큰 부담이 됐다.

거스 히딩크 한국팀 감독은 “우리는 마지막, 최후의 관문을 통과할 수 없었다”고 말했다. 한국은 마지막, 그리고 궁극적인 승리를 거둘 수는 없을 것이다. 그러나 한국팀은 조국에 무한한 자신감과 단합을 가져다주었고, 세계의 관중들에게 투혼을 보여줬다. 아시아의 어던 팀도 월드컵에서 이만큼 많이 이루지 못했다. 패배한 선수들이 인사하면서 손을 흔들자 붉은 셔츠를 입은 수만명의 팬들은 박수갈채를 보내면서 친숙한 구호 “대∼한민국”을 연호했다.
