[NYT]Inside Story on the Soggy Jerseys

After watching games in the early-morning hours, Americans have sent e-mail messages flying across the time zones, asking: ”What is it with these guys, anyway? Is this something we really want to watch over breakfast?” Americans are reacting with queasiness to the ancient soccer tradition of exchanging shirts after a game - not just trading the shirts, mind you, but promptly pulling them on, sweat and all.

But for the vast majority of players - and for soccer fans - the exchange of shirts heals hard feelings over nasty tackles and wayward elbows. ”It’s a way of showing respect for the other player - and for the sport,” DaMarcus Beasley of the United States said.

With every player allotted one jersey per game to trade, some cut their deals ahead of time. Tony Sanneh, the solid defensive back, made his arrangements early in the spring with Jacek Krzynowek, his Polish teammate at Nuremberg in the German league, when they realized they would play each other.

Mostly, the exchange is made on the spur of the moment on the field. Joe-Max Moore said, “You kind of go like that,” twirling his index fingers in the international gesture for “Let’s make a deal.”

Not everybody wants to trade. The Argentines stalked off without even making eye contact after losing to England, and then they left crying after being eliminated by Sweden.June 17, 2002. George Vecsey(Seoul)
