“I will seek for ways to promote transparency and fairness of trials and lay an institutional foundation to prevent the judicial administration from infringing upon the independence of trials,” said Kim Myung-soo, the chief justice of the Supreme Court, in his New Year’s speech on Monday.
“I understand that you’ve felt both shock and anger from the series of events surrounding our court system, and I also know that there is a great deal of concern on the part of our public about independence of court and justice, with trust in justice having been deeply eroded,” Chief Justice Kim added.
“For the new year, we have to forge a foundation of trust for our court,” said Mr. Kim, stressing that he will do his best to realize justice and independence of court by implementing the practice of “good trials” as he had pledged for. Chief Justice Kim also added that he will make every endeavor to create desirable and faithful trial practices for the public with an unswerving commitment to fair trials. This reflects his will to push ahead with the judicial reforms this year, which he has emphasized since the inauguration in September last year.
