North Korea will put spurs to the development of cutting-edge weapons that are light and unmanned to mark the 70th anniversary of the ruling Korean Workers` Party and Korea`s liberation from Japanese rule, the reclusive country announced on Friday.

Rodong Sinmun, the North`s state newspaper, reported that the party`s Central Committee`s Political Bureau made the decision at a meeting, adopting a resolution on celebrating the major anniversaries. The resolution read that the North will "manufacture larger numbers of powerful, cutting-edge military hardware of its own style that are of high precision, light, unmanned and intelligent" to meet the requirements for modern warfare "with the spirit and vigor of having dominated space."

Analysts say that the North`s emphasis of its plan to develop sophisticated weapons following its declaration of collapsed dialogue with the United States is intended to boast that it is in the final stage of developing smaller and lighter nuclear warheads and upgrading its drones. They also say that it is possible for Pyongyang to show off its sophisticated weapons including new nuclear weapons in various events, including one marking the founding anniversary of its ruling party.
