The World IT Show 2014 launched Monday at Busan Exhibition & Convention Center. The largest-ever IT exhibition in Korea, its main topic was 5G technology. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics showcased their next-generation 5Gs, a technology that is 200 times faster than 4G.
Samsung Electronics decorated its booth under the theme "A place where an innovative future led by 5G network begins." The world`s first open-space display of 5G network was showcased at the entrance of the booth, while a ultra-high-definition (UHD) video was transmitted to a large-screen TV via real time streaming using 5G.
LG Electronics explained the concept of 5G under four themes of "Connect Things," "Deliver Feeling," "Read Minds" and "Create Reality." LG also unveiled its new mid-price smartphone "AKA," short for "Also Known As," at the World IT Show. Coming in four types, AKA comes with "eyes" on front top that changes expression and blink according to different functions such as listening to music, alarm, etc.
Telecom operators also announced their visions for 5G. Lee Sang-chul, vice chairman of LG U+, at the opening ceremony of the 5G Global Summit 2014 held on Monday, delivered a keynote speech on "innovation and evolution for 5G." 5G Global Summit 2014 is a special event on the side of the International Telecommunications Union Plenipotentiary Conference, and is a place where major countries including Korea, China and European countries share information on future mobile telecommunication while strengthening cooperation.
SK Telecom, which signed a memorandum of understanding with Samsung Electronics for cooperation in 5G, announced the same day that the two companies would begin joint technology research on network technology and new service development. The two companies agreed on mutual cooperation through sharing of 5G vision at standardization organizations and technology consultative groups both at home and abroad. Other agreements include the development of large-volume high-quality 5G and Internet of Things, as well as technology R&D and joint testing of 5G mobile telecommunications.
Meanwhile, KT announced Korea`s first giga Internet (1 gigabyte per second) commercialization service, which enables downloading a movie in seven seconds.
