Chinese oil rig in disputed South China Sea

“Haiyang Shiyou 981,” a large oil rig recently deployed by China in the disputed South China Sea, and Chinese vessels have caused a physical confrontation in the area between China and Vietnam. The site is about 31 kilometers away from the Paracel Islands that have been occupied by China since 1974 and 24 kilometers away from the Vietnamese territory.
