Samsung, LG to hold a developer conference in San Francisco

Tech-savvy people would know what these words are: WWDC, I/O, and Build. These are developer meetings by Apple, Google, and Microsoft. A developer meeting started out as an event that unveils new software to IT programmers but now it has transformed into a large event for the public. Apples’ WWDC ticket, which costs 1,599 U.S. dollars, is sold twice the price in the black market every year, and Google’s 900-dollar I/O tickets are sold out in an hour.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will hold their first developer conference in San Francisco at the end of this month. The two companies will introduce cutting-edge technologies and attract excellent Silicon Valley developers to their smart ecosystem.

Samsung Electronics will hold a “Samsung Developer Conference” at Union Square Hotel from Sunday through Tuesday (local time). Samsung has held free developer conferences at Spain’s Mobile World Congress and other key nations every year, but this is the first time to host a paid event independently. The ticket costs 299 dollars. Online registration for the event started from late September.

The developer conference will have 30 sessions in a wide range of categories including mobile, television, games, and web. Samsung will share services optimal to smart device and app development cases. It will also open software development kits (SDK) for developers. A smartphone industry source said, “Samsung is likely to showcase its own operating system `Tizen.` If Samsung holds an independent developer meeting, tensions will grow between Samsung and Google.”

LG Electronics will hold its first developer conference “LG Developer” at W Hotel on next Tuesday. Unlike other developer conferences, it will host the event for free. LG will spend a lot of time on introducing smart development kits for “Q Remote,” which operates smartphones like a remote controller. Q Remote is a function that LG Electronics applied to smartphones for the first time in the world. Developers can use Q Remote to produce various remote controllers such as a character remote controller and a remote controller that provides a large font size for the elderly.

“Companies that hosted world developer conferences were mostly software-based U.S. companies such as Apple, Google, and MS,” said a source from the Korean IT industry. “It is meaningful that hardware-focused Korean companies like Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics hold events in the U.S.”
