Trucks that had been considered as the main culprit behind foul driving will join safe driving campaign.

Korea Freight Forwarders Association and National Police Agency signed a memorandum of understanding for mutual cooperation on Monday to promote the "safe driving mileage system." The ceremony was joined by 60 people including Chairman Kim Ok-sang of the forwarders association, Traffic Department Director Seo Beom-soo of the National Police Agency. The participating staff and employees delivered a written pledge for safe driving.

Korea Freight Forwarders Association is a group of heads of 9,800 transportation companies in 16 cities and provinces nationwide. It secures 162,000 trucks for business and general use (including 30,000 trucks for special use). The association will have all members join the safe driving mileage via 16 regional branches.

Seo said, "The number of people killed from traffic accidents per 10,000 business-purpose vehicles was 10.1 persons, 4.6 times higher than that of non-business vehicles. We have high expectations on the system since the biggest-scale Korea Freight Forwarders Association joined the campaign." Kim said, "The safe driving mileage is a system that is necessary for the freight sector and a campaign that stresses the need for traffic rule observation."

The mileage campaign, jointly being promoted by the Dong-A Ilbo and police, grants 10 special points to drivers who abide by their pledge not to violate traffic rule or cause traffic accident for a year. If they get penalty points after being granted 10 points, the penalty is reduced in proportion. The system has been effective from August 1.
