U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama (middle) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi watch the unveiling of Sojourner Truth’s memorial bust at the Independence Hall of Capitol Hill in Washington. Truth was an African-American activist who fought for female suffrage and the abolition of slavery during the Civil War. It was the first time that a black American woman got a memorial bust on Capitol Hill. Mrs. Obama received applause after saying, “I hope that Sojourner Truth would be proud to see me, a descendant of slaves, serving as the first lady of the United States of America.”
