Manchester United yesterday took over second place in the English Premier League with a 1-0 home win over Wigan Athletic.

United midfielder Park Ji-sung was named a substitute but did not make it on the field. Coach Alex Ferguson said Park will play at Bolton Saturday, however.

The Red Devils won their fourth consecutive league game, and have 44 points through 13 wins, five ties and two defeats. Chelsea has won 12 games, drawn six and lost three for 42 points.

United is now within two points of league leader Liverpool (13-7-1, 46 points).

Against Wigan, United placed strikers Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov up front and Luis Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo in the middle.

United scored almost as soon as the game began. Ronaldo floated a cross on the right side that was tapped in by Rooney. The ball hit the back of the net like a bullet.

Rooney, however, suffered a hamstrung injury in the seventh minute and had to be replaced by Carlos Tevez. Rooney is expected to miss three weeks.
