Police is expanding investigation on the instigators of the rallies against U.S. beef imports.

The investigation division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced Friday that it has sent letters to 37-year-old Ju, policy director of the People`s Association for Measures against Mad Cow Disease, and 22-year-old Kang, a senior university student who chairs the Korea University Students’ Association, on Thursday asking them to present themselves.

“We decided to examine Ju and Kang because they instigated unlawful acts such as the occupation of the roads and street protests and might have participated in planning the rallies,” said a police official.

Accordingly, the number of core figures related to the rallies listed for police investigation rose to 16 from 14, which includes co-directors Park Won-seok and Han Yong-jin of the civic association.

In addition, police is investigating six protesters who were arrested at around 9:50 p.m. Thursday for occupying a road near Euljiro 1-ga and rejecting the police order to dismiss.

As of Thursday, a total of 975 protesters were taken to the police station, and 12 of them were arrested and 879 booked without detention.
