Kim Hyong-o, a five-term lawmaker of the Grand National Party, was selected as the party’s nominee to be the National Assembly’s next speaker, on Monday.

The nomination was decided by a vote of GNP lawmakers at the National Assembly. Among the 153 GNP lawmakers, 145 of them cast a vote. Kim won a majority of the party’s votes by defeating Ahn Sang-soo, a four-time party lawmaker. Kim received 102 votes to Ahn’s 42.

Party lawmakers also unanimously nominated party four-term lawmaker Lee Yoon-sung, to be the Assembly’s vice speaker. Lee was uncontested.
