Per capita earned income tax in 2005 was found to be 1.60 million won, up 56 percent from 2000. According to data the Finance Ministry, submitted on Tuesday to the Finance and Economy Committee at the National Assembly, 6.1 million registered taxpayers paid a total of 9.78 trillion won in income tax in 2005.

Each person paid 1.60 million won in income taxes on average, up 56.4 percent, or 1.02 million won, from 2000.

Per capita income tax grew each year – 1.11 million won in 2001, 1.12 million won in 2002, 1.22 million won in 2003 and 1.42 million won in 2004.

The increased tax burden is due to a decrease in the ratio of taxpayers to the total number of workers. Although the total amount of income tax revenues has continuously increased, the ratio of taxpayers, which stood at 53.9 percent in 2000 and increased to 56.3 percent in 2001, dropped to 47.1 percent in 2005.
