The Seoul District Public Prosecutor’s Office which is investigating the illegal eavesdropping scandal of the old National Security Planning Agency and the National Intelligence Service (NIS), summoned three former and current NIS employees on August 11 and looked into activities of the clandestine bugging team Mirim of the Agency for the National Security Planning and how it obtained wiretapped tapes from Kong Un-young, the former head of Mirim (58, arrested).

As an analysis on materials seized at the house and office of Chun Yong-taek, the former head of the NIS, is completed, the prosecution is considering when to summon Cheon based on the results of surveying former and current NIS employees.

An official of the prosecution said that it has no plans to summon Lee Hak-su, the Samsung Group’s corporate restructuring chief, and nothing has been decided yet on whether to summon Lee Kun-hee, the Samsung Group head, and Hong Seok-hyun, the former president of JoongAng Ilbo, even though they are reviewable subjects in principle.

Meanwhile, the NIS handed over investigation results on wiretapping which was done under the Kim Dae-jung administration to the prosecution, but it is said that there is not enough grounds for the data.

An official of the prosecution said on August 11 that there is not much content in the data submitted by the NIS and there is not enough ground to support the investigation results. He added that they will investigate step by step, seeking cooperation from the NIS as they start from the beginning.

Accordingly, it seems it will take a substantial amount of time and difficulty for the prosecution to look into wiretapping activities on Kim Dae-jung administration.

The prosecution received a 260-page investigation data packet from the NIS on August 5, the date the NIS confessed to the wiretapping. Since then, they have reviewed the data and mapped out an investigation scheme.
