The best point guards on the court in Korean and U.S. basketball held a meaningful meeting.
The stars are "New Generation Guard" Kim Seung-Hyun (26, Orions) and the NBA`s "Master of Defense," Gary Payton (36, L.A. Lakers)
Kim Seung-Hyun met Payton, who came to Korea on July 29 for a four-to-five day program for ceremonies including an autograph event for the fans, through the help of Kims sponsor, Nike, at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel, Seoul on August 1.
The two players have an age gap of 10 years, but both are second to none as point guards in their individual leagues.
Kim gave his first impression of Payton, saying, "I`ve watched and was impressed by Payton on TV during my middle school years. He looks nice personally and seems to have an outgoing character." Payton replied, "I`ve heard Kim is a very talented player."
The common topic from both of the players was Ha Seung-jin (19), who was picked by the Portland Trailblazers to be the first Korean to entering the NBA. Payton gave some words with anticipation, "Portland is a good team, and it won`t spare efforts to support Ha. But a little time is needed, and we`ll have to see 4-5 years down the road."
Kim Seung-hyun also dreams of entering the NBA. Last month, Kim worked with Michael Jordans former special trainer for a 20-day training session and returned home.
Payton answered the question of the secret of surviving in the NBA for 14 years, saying, "Repetitions of constant training during the off-season paid off," and added "The rest of the players will catch up if you take a break, so it`s a necessity for survival." Kim replied, "I respect Payton. It`s still true that Korean players kick back during the off-season," as he nodded.
Payton, who has a contract of $10 million over three years, commented, "Pro players should be role models. I run a charity foundation to assist poor students," as he emphasized public responsibility. Kim also said, "My annual salary (250 million won) is nothing compared with Paytons, but I have it in mind to help needy neighbors," as he shared the same feelings.
Payton has been selected as an All-Star nine times and earned gold medals in the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics, but actually doesn`t hold a NBA championship ring. So he emphasized and said, "My lifes goal is a championship. I`ll be playing two or three more years, and I wish to accomplish that goal by all means."
Kim Seung-hyun wished Payton good luck, saying, "I` won in my rookie year, so lots of luck to Gary Payton. I hope Payton rises to the top."
