‘Korea leads the international standards of memory semiconductor.’

At 30th of June, Korean Agency for Technology and Standards affiliated with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy announced that Korea would take the position of the Executive Secretary Nation for Semiconductor Technical Committee (TC 47) of International Electrical & Electronic Commission (IEC). The committee is responsible for the establishment of standards in semiconductor materials. It is the first time for Korea to take the position of an executive secretary that is one of 80 positions of IEC.

TUS has been taking the position of the Executive Secretary Nation for TC 47 for last 30 years, since in the early of 1970s. It is one of key technical committees, and even Japan has not taken the position.

Kim Kee-nam, the Senior Manager of Samsung Electronics will be responsible for International Executive Secretary of the nation. Mr. Kim has played key role to develop new technologies related to D RAM as the leader of ‘New Technology Development Team’ since the early of 1990s.

According to the announcement of Korean Agency for Technology and Standards △Mr. Melvin, of Texas Instruments, has been responsible for the position of International Executive Secretary, but recently TI gave up the production of memory semiconductors. So it is difficult form him to perform the position △In memory semiconductor market Korea share 40% of the market △Korea outstands in the development of new technologies of memory semiconductor. The facts mentioned above are the reasons for Korea takes the positions.

There are no terms for Executive Secretary Nation and International Executive Secretary. As far as there is no particular reason, the position is been kept.

Lee Sang-kun, a researcher of Korean Agency for Technology and Standards talked “Korea will play key role to establish the standards of VLSI circuits, package semiconductor for flat display, individual components. Many domestic companies are equipped with advanced technologies. The possibility for their technologies to be accepted as standards is very high, and consequently, the international market for them will be extended.”

Korean Agency for Technology and Standards has already submitted two international standards proposals; PDP of Plasma display and LCD. The agency expects that the position of the Executive Secretary Nation would affect on the acceptance positively.

The Executive Secretary Nation is on the position to understand new trends of core technologies at a once.
