The Tokyo Newspaper reported on August 17 that the newly built Aegis convoy of Japan`s Naval Defense Force will carry two Total Missile Defense systems. If Japan continues to keep the Aegis with TMD capability which intercepts ballistic missiles, it may lead to China and North Korea building up their military in opposition. The Japanese government is presently conducting join research on TMD with the U.S.

Tokyo Newspaper reported that the Naval Defense Force, which already possesses four Aegis ships, will continue the `Heavy Industry Defense Capability Maintenance Plan` and construct one Aegis convoy in 2002 and 2003. It plans to install leading edge technology called `Baseline 7` which will be able automatically to locate targets, manage data, and intercept missiles. This system will include software that allows naval deployed high altitude system capacity and collaborative warfare capacity.

The Naval Defense Force plans to station the newly built Aegis ships designed to respond to Chinese and North Korean ballistic missile attack in the Kyoto Maijuru and Nagasaki Sasaebo naval bases.

The Tokyo Newspaper predicts that the installation of the TMD system in Aegis ships will give impetus to Japan`s import of TMD and increased defense spending.
