The government decided to complete the construction of the four Korean standard nuclear power plants, including No.5, 6 Uljin, and No.5, 6 Youngkwang by 2006, and to undertake the additional construction of six nuclear power plants, including No.1, 2, 3, 4 Shingori, and No.1, 2 Shinwolsung.
The government also decided to develop the small- and mid size reactor for seawater and freshwater, and to secure the ability to design and produce the new form of nuclear energy with high combustion by investing 1.5 trillion won by 2006, on the one hand. On the other hand, the government decided to embark on the development of the fourth generation reactor in joint partnership with the developed countries at the same time.
The government confirmed `the second comprehensive plan on the promotion of nuclear power` in the 251st nuclear power committee meeting, presided over by Lee Han-Dong Prime Minister. Ministers of the Finance-Economy, Commerce, Industry-Energy, Science-Technology, and Planning-Budget attended the meeting.
Along with this, the government decided to establish the advanced radioactive research center to expand the use of the radiation and radioactive isotope from 10 percent to 30 percent by expanding the use of the radiation in the field of bioscience, agriculture, and environment.
The government also decided to build the medium- and low level disposal facilities by 2008 for the safe management of the radioactive waste products and the nuclear fuel after its usage, and the halfway storage facilities of nuclear energy after its usage, respectively. The government also decided to expand the exports of the nuclear power techniques and equipments.
In addition, the government confirmed the plan to construct the No.3, 4 Shingori nuclear power plants. This plan calls for the construction of the 1.4 million kW of two pressurized light-water reactor nuclear power plants in the 0.81 million pyong land around the Hyoamli (Jangahneup, Gijang Kun, Pusan) and the Shinamli (Suhsengmyon, Ulju Kun, Ulsan). The government decided to complete the construction by September 2010 and September 2011, respectively.
