Police will impose 30,000 won fines Monday on those found not to be using seat belts as part of a month-long publicity and public awareness campaign. All traffic police officers will take part in the special police operation, aimed at ensuring the seat belt law is obeyed. The intensive checks will also be carried out on drivers of taxis, express buses and cargo trucks.

On city streets, only drivers and front-seat passengers are required to buckle up, but on highways all vehicle occupants have to use safety belts and infants should be fastened into special car seats.

Only pregnant women and the physically disabled will be allowed not to buckle up.
